There are plenty of ways to entertain kids throughout the seasons and away from television or video games. Reading is an all time favorite, but I do admit that even the best book can get you bored. What else to do with the kids, simple:
- Have a tea party. Iced tea makes a perfect refreshment any time of the year. Have your kids prepare a large jug of iced tea, slice the lemon, and use some fancy tea cups. Set the table very nicely as if you were going to receive someone very important. Then, drink the iced tea while talking French. That might help them learn a few words. “Bonjour, mercie d’avoir accepte mon invitation”. “De rien, Mademoiselle, pas de quoi”
- Game boards. Game boards are available for all ages and are a great way to bring the family together. From dominos to monopoly there is a game board out for everyone. Dominos can be really fun for young kids even if they cannot count. You can help them learn how to count. Math is fun when it is done in a relaxed setting.
- Hoola Hoop. Hoola Hoop is a fun game for all ages. Hoola Hoop is fun but you need some space to play it. Create the space. Move the furniture around and make sure nothing will break.
- Build a tent. Take a few chairs in the house and set them at each corner of a square. Cover the chairs with a large blanket or comforter. Secure each end of the blanket. Put your sleeping bag under the tent and have fun telling stories and falling asleep with your little ones.
- Bake, Bake, Bake. Baking teaches kids many skills they will use throughout their life. Of course, they can also eat what they make. They can contribute to reading the recipes, finding, measuring, and mixing the ingredients. They can learn the different units of measurements and most important how accuracy is important. If you put the wrong amount, you certainly will not get the desired product. Remember, safety is always a priority. Don’t let very young kids near the oven or stove.
